The days are getting shorter and autumn is finally upon us. As the blooms of the roses begin to fade, here at David Austin we are gearing up for the bare root season.
This is a particularly busy time for us because although our roses are not in flower, autumn is the perfect time to plant to ensure an abundance of blooms next summer. There is no better antidote to missing those long summer days than using this cooler time to plan, plant and dream of the warm sunny days ahead.
Sometimes the simplest schemes have the most impact. The colour blocking trend is based around the idea of mass planting the same variety and colour over a large area, much like planting a hedge. It works particularly well in long borders but can also work in smaller gardens using a length of containers or beds to frame them.
Here we have selected our most healthy and tolerant varieties. Although in general,
roses are not high maintenance, these varieties are particularly easy to care for. They will do well in any garden and even in shadier areas. Not only are they great for novice gardeners but also for those who struggle to find the time to garden.
A real trend in garden design at the moment is creating outdoor living spaces. A pergola is a great way of creating a ‘room like’ area within your garden, perfect for outdoor dining or seating. A rose-covered pergola will create a scented shady spot for sunny days, or, when decorated with solar lights, a cosy retreat in the evening.
It has been half a century since David Austin introduced Shropshire Lass in 1968. An unusual cross between an Alba rose and a Hybrid Tea; it is a very important rose within our collection as not only was it one of the first climbing roses he bred, it is also the rose that all our English Alba Hybrids descend from.
Our rose gardens, plant centre and
gift shop are open all year round.
The Story Of David Austin
