Most Fragrant English Roses

Everyone has a different perception of scent but the English Roses listed below are the varieties we consider to be the most fragrant. The English Roses are famous for the diversity and strength of their fragrances, with many varieties having won awards, both nationally and internationally, for their delicious fragrances which can be Old Rose, Tea, fruity, myrrh, musky or almost any mixture of these elements. To make the most of their heady scents, we recommend planting them near to the house or alongside paths and seating areas in the garden.

It bears flowers of the most perfect formation – shallow cups of purest mid pink. They flower very freely from early summer until well into the autumn, and have a strong, pure Old Rose fragrance, which has been described as reminiscent of rose-based cosmetics. It has an excellent bushy, upright habit, its full head almost completely clothed in blooms. The young foliage is bronze at first, later becoming green. David Austin, 2004.

    Jubilee Celebration

This is one of the finest roses we have introduced so far. Its large, domed flowers are of a lovely rich salmon-pink with tints of gold on the underside of the petals; each bloom being elegantly held well above the foliage. Despite the size of the flowers, they are produced with exceptional freedom and continuity. There is a strong, deliciously fruity scent with hints of fresh lemon and raspberry. Gentle Hermione

    English Standard Tree Rose
This variety bears some of the most perfectly formed flowers of true old rose character. Starting as attractive, nicely rounded buds, the flowers gradually open to shallow cups with perfectly arranged petals. Their colour is pure pink with soft blush on the outside and a lovely pure pink at the centre; the whole effect being totally charming. As the blooms age, the colour of the outer petals softens to a pearly shade. It has excellent health and the petals are particularly resistant to rain. The leaves are tinged red at first, later turning green, then dark green with age. It has a strong, warm, classic myrrh fragrance. .

  2. Lady Emma Hamilton

    Lady Emma Hamilton

    English Standard Tree Rose
A variety of rather unusual colouring for an English Rose, but nonetheless very pleasing and useful for creating a little excitement in the border. Before the flowers even begin to open, the outside of the buds are a most wonderful dark red with dashes of orange. When fully open, the flowers have an attractive, incurving chalice shape. Their colouring was new to the English Roses: a lovely mixture of rich, almost tangerine orange on the inside of the petals and a more yellow orange on the outside; the whole set off against the very dark, bronzy green, polished leaves that slowly become dark green with age. The flowers have a strong, delicious, fruity fragrance with hints of pear, grape and citrus fruits. Their colour varies a little according to the season, gradually changing as more of the inner petals are exposed to create a wonderful contrast. It flowers freely and remains healthy.

Light crimson buds gradually open to reveal very deep velvety crimson blooms, with lighter coloured outer petals. The flowers are large cups at first, becoming shallowly cupped with time. As the flowers age, we get glimpses of the stigma and stamens amongst the petals. There is a strong Old Rose scent which our fragrance expert, Robert Calkin, assesses as warm and fruity with blackberry, blueberry and damson notes". A healthy variety.
