With a little dedication, you can create something truly special when training a climbing rose on an arch. Not only does an arch add height and formality to a garden, it also allows you to really appreciate the beauty and fragrance of the rose every time you walk through it. A repeat-flowering variety is ideal for growing on an arch or, alternatively, a rose which will bear attractive hips later in the season. If your heart is set on a once-flowering variety, you may like to consider planting a late summer-flowering clematis alongside the rose, as this will extend the flowering season. For small arches, avoid the more vigorous climbers and ramblers, which could completely overwhelm the structure.
