Why Are Roses Putting on Such a Spectacular Display This Summer?

If your roses seem particularly beautiful this year, you're not imagining it.

Across the country, gardeners are enjoying one of the most impressive displays in recent memory. Climbers are covered in blooms, shrub roses are flowering with remarkable abundance and gardens are filled with colour, fragrance and life.

The reason lies in a rare sequence of weather conditions that roses have responded to exceptionally well. A wet spring, plenty of sunshine and the recent spell of hot weather have combined to create near-perfect conditions for flowering.

A Strong Start to the Season

The foundations for this summer's display were laid much earlier in the year.

Spring brought regular rainfall and consistently moist soil, allowing roses to establish strong, healthy root systems. With access to water and nutrients exactly when they needed them, plants were able to put on vigorous growth and build the framework required to support an abundance of flowers.

Healthy roots are often hidden from view, but they are the starting point for every exceptional display above ground.

Powered by Sunlight

As spring gave way to early summer, bright days and high light levels allowed roses to gather the energy needed for flowering.
Every bloom requires an enormous amount of energy to produce. Through photosynthesis, leaves convert sunlight into the resources a plant needs to grow, flower and thrive.

This year, the combination of plentiful light and relatively low levels of stress meant roses were able to devote more energy to producing flowers rather than simply coping with difficult conditions. The result has been stronger growth, larger displays and exceptional flowering performance.

The Moment Everything Burst into Bloom

The recent heatwave provided the final trigger.

After a spring spent building strong roots and storing energy, the sudden warmth signalled that it was time for roses to flower. Summer had arrived, pollinators were active and conditions were right for the plant to reproduce.

In response, roses began putting all that stored energy into their blooms. Buds opened in quick succession, flowers appeared in abundance and gardens were suddenly filled with colour, fragrance and the gentle hum of bees moving from flower to flower.

The heatwave didn't create the flowers. It simply told the roses it was time.

Combined with the strong foundations built earlier in the season, the result has been one of the most spectacular displays many gardeners can remember.
