How to Plant a Potted Standard Tree Rose
By following these simple steps, you will give your potted standard tree rose the best possible start, helping it establish quickly and flourish for years to come.
When to Plant
Potted standard tree roses can be planted for most of the year. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen, waterlogged or very dry. Once planted, water generously during the first few weeks while the rose establishes.
You Will Need
- Garden fork
- Garden spade
- Stake and tree ties
- David Austin’s Mycorrhizal Fungi
- Soil improver, compost or well-rotted manure
- Watering can
Choosing the Perfect Spot
Choose a sunny position with at least four hours of direct sunlight each day. Allow enough space around the rose so air can circulate freely and roots are not crowded by nearby plants, trees or hedges. Well-drained soil will encourage strong, healthy growth.
Planting Your Rose
Step 1 | Prepare the areaDig over the soil thoroughly using a garden fork, removing any weeds or large stones. Loosen the soil at the base of the planting area to help new roots travel downwards easily and settle quickly.
Step 2 | Dig a generous holeDig a hole approximately 60cm wide by 45cm deep, allowing enough space for both the root ball and the stake. Mix one spadeful of soil improver or well-rotted manure into the base of the hole, and two further spadefuls into the soil you have removed.
Step 3 | Insert the stakePosition the stake around 10cm from the centre of the planting hole and drive it firmly into the ground using a mallet or hammer. The top of the stake should sit level with the point where the trunk branches into the head of the rose.
Step 4 | Remove the rose from its potCarefully remove the rose from its pot and gently tease the roots outward. Hold the rose over the planting hole, ready for planting.
Step 5 | Add Mycorrhizal FungiSprinkle approximately 30g of David Austin’s Mycorrhizal Fungi onto and around the roots, gently patting it onto the outside of the root ball and surrounding compost.
Step 6 | Position and backfillPlace the rose upright in the centre of the hole, ensuring the base of the stem sits around 5cm below soil level. Refill the hole with the enriched soil, lightly firming as you go to remove any air pockets and help anchor the rose securely.
Step 7 | Tie and waterSecure the stem to the stake using the tree ties provided, attaching one near the top and another lower down the stem. Water thoroughly, allowing the moisture to reach deep into the roots.
