Belvoir Castle

High above the Vale of Belvoir, in the gentle folds of the Leicestershire countryside, stands Belvoir Castle, home to the Duke and Duchess of Rutland for almost a thousand years. Within its grand landscape lies one of its most cherished treasures: the Rose Garden, a place of scent, colour and timeless beauty.

This celebrated garden has been lovingly restored through a continuing partnership between Belvoir Castle and David Austin® Roses. More than six hundred English Roses now fill its beds, chosen for their fragrance, form and enduring character. Together they create a patchwork of soft blush pinks, creamy ivories, rich rose tones and deep crimsons. Each variety contributes to the tapestry of bloom, from the pure elegance of Desdemona® (Auskindling) to the abundant charm of Hyde Hall® (Ausbosky).

The garden itself is an exquisite example of Edwardian design, structured yet inviting, and framed by the statuary and symmetry of a Grade II* listed landscape. It is home to striking sculptures, including Winter by Caius Gabriel Cibber, and enclosed by formal yew hedges that give a sense of quiet enclosure.

The restoration was inspired by original plans discovered in the castle archives, drawn by renowned garden designer Harold Peto. Guided by these historic drawings, Emma, Duchess of Rutland, and the team at David Austin® Roses have reimagined the garden as a haven of fragrance and grace, offering a sensory journey from early summer to autumn.

Visitors can explore the garden at their leisure, following pathways scented with English Roses and framed by classical form. In spring, the wider grounds burst into colour with bulbs and blossom, leading to the full romance of summer when the roses reach their peak. Throughout the seasons, Belvoir Castle offers an ever-changing scene of natural beauty.

David Austin® Roses also hosts workshops at the castle, inviting guests to learn more about the story of the English Rose and discover how to nurture their own gardens with confidence and joy.

“The Rose Garden has always been incredibly popular, with visitors returning each year to wander within the walls to see and smell the magnificent roses,” says Andy Tudbury, Head Gardener at Belvoir Castle.

“Working with David Austin® Roses allows us to celebrate the garden’s history while creating a memorable experience for every visitor.”

"It was a huge privilege to be asked by the Duchess of Rutland to revamp the long established rose garden at the castle. Although there were a few challenges along the way, including a large tree coming down during the work, the finished garden is a magnificent blend of pink and white roses, interwoven with complementary perennials and bulbs. Under the guidance of the wonderfully experienced head gardener, Andy Tudbury, its beauty and fragrance can be enjoyed from late spring to almost Christmas. I am sure it will give the family, and the many visitors, great pleasure for years to come."
