The Rose Garden at Rockingham Castle
There is a quiet sense of continuity in the Rose Garden at Rockingham Castle. Set within ancient earthworks, the garden brings together centuries of history with the enduring beauty of roses in bloom.
The garden sits on the site of the castle’s medieval keep, once the stronghold at its centre. Following the English Civil War, the defences were dismantled and the landscape began its gradual transformation. In the nineteenth century, formal rose beds were introduced, their layout reflecting the shape of the original tower. The enclosing yew hedge, with its carefully placed openings, still hints at this earlier structure.
In 2023, Rockingham Castle invited David Austin Roses to help rejuvenate the planting. Hybrid tea roses were replaced with English shrub roses, selected for their natural charm, generous flowering and rich fragrance. The intention was to create a display that feels both timeless and resilient.
Planting has taken place in stages. The first apricot, orange and yellow sections were planted in 2024, followed by soft pinks in 2025, and finally white and deep pink in 2026. Each year has brought a new part of the garden into flower.
The garden is arranged in six sections, each composed of several beds and organised by colour. The palette moves gently from white through warm tones into pink, creating a sense of harmony across the space. Within each section, the planting is tiered, with lower-growing roses at the front and taller varieties rising towards the yew hedge, allowing each to be seen at its best.
The collection includes a wide range of English roses, chosen for their beauty, reliability and long flowering season. Together they offer a succession of blooms and a gentle, lingering fragrance that carries through the garden.
From early summer, the Rose Garden reveals itself slowly. Buds open, colours deepen, and the character of each variety comes into its own. It is a garden best enjoyed at an unhurried pace, where each visit offers something quietly new.
In bringing together history and planting, the Rose Garden at Rockingham Castle continues to evolve, honouring its past while looking ahead to seasons still to come.
"The restoration of the Rose Garden at Rockingham Castle has been a wonderful collaborative project. Working closely with the team, we have introduced English roses chosen to enhance the garden's historic setting while ensuring a long season of beauty and fragrance. It is exciting to see each phase of planting come together, and we look forward to watching the garden flourish in the years ahead."
