Finding the Right Rose for Your Garden: Choosing Your Rose Colour

(Part Three)

When choosing a rose, colour is often the first thing that captures our attention. Long before we notice fragrance or the form of the bloom, it is usually the colour that quietly draws us in.

In the garden, colour does far more than simply decorate a space. It shapes the atmosphere. A rose in a soft, pale shade may lend a feeling of calm and gentleness to a border, while deeper tones add richness and depth. Brighter colours bring warmth and vitality, catching the light and lifting the spirit.

As you consider which rose to plant, it can be helpful to reflect on the mood you would like your garden to hold. Do you imagine something peaceful and romantic? Something bold and striking? Or perhaps something bright and joyful that catches the eye from across the garden.

Here are three colour palettes that many gardeners find themselves drawn to.

Soft and Romantic

There is something quietly enchanting about roses in delicate, gentle shades. Pale pinks, soft apricots, elegant creams and pure whites seem to carry a natural grace that sits beautifully in almost any garden.

These colours have a lovely way of catching the light. In the early morning or the calm of evening they seem to glow softly, lending the garden a sense of peace and stillness. A border filled with these hues often feels harmonious and relaxed, as though everything is gently working together.

Soft tones are also wonderfully easy to combine with other plants. They blend naturally among perennials and shrubs, creating a layered, flowing look rather than something overly formal. Lavender, catmint, foxgloves and soft blue salvias all make particularly charming companions.

For many gardeners, these shades create the classic feeling of a rose garden. Romantic, timeless and quietly beautiful.

Bright and Cheerful

Some roses seem to radiate pure joy. Vibrant yellows, glowing oranges and lively scarlets bring warmth and energy wherever they are planted.

These colours naturally draw the eye, making them perfect for borders where you would like a rose to stand out. A golden rose catching the afternoon sun can feel like a small burst of light within the garden.

They also combine beautifully with other vibrant summer flowers. Dahlias, salvias, rudbeckias and ornamental grasses can all create lively plantings that feel full of movement and colour.

For gardeners who enjoy a space that feels uplifting and full of life, these brighter roses often become the stars of the border.

Rich and Dramatic

Some roses bring a sense of depth and drama that can transform a planting scheme. Deep crimsons, velvety purples and rich magentas carry a luxurious presence that naturally draws the eye.

These darker colours often add structure to a border. A rose in deep crimson placed among softer shades can act as a focal point, giving the planting contrast and definition.

They are especially striking when paired with lighter or silvery foliage. Plants such as lavender, artemisia and pale foxgloves allow these darker blooms to stand out beautifully.

In the softer light of evening, these colours often appear even richer, their petals seeming almost like velvet. The effect can feel bold yet still wonderfully elegant.

Let Colour Lead the Way

Choosing the colour of your rose is not simply about matching other plants in the garden. It is about the feeling you would like your garden to hold.

Some gardeners are drawn to the gentle romance of soft pastels. Others find themselves captivated by the depth of crimson and purple blooms. And many delight in the cheerful warmth of bright yellows and oranges.

There is no right answer. Simply the colour that makes you pause, look again, and imagine it blooming in your garden.

Next week we will explore another important element when choosing a rose: the shape and size of the flower itself. From neatly cupped blooms to full, many petalled rosettes, each brings its own character and charm to the garden.
