While it can be a little challenging, designing your own rose garden or drawing up a planting scheme can be hugely rewarding.
A rose border can be a simple rectangle or a more irregular shape, a single or double border. To draw up a planting scheme, start with an accurate, scale drawing, on squared paper, of the area. 1cm to 1m works very well. Decide on overall strategies, for example, colour scheme, height of plants, mixed with perennials or purely roses, repeat flowering or not.
Make a list of varieties you would like to include, complete with colour and dimensions. Remember the dimensions we quote for each variety are guides and that many roses can be encouraged to grow larger or smaller by judicious pruning.
The next step is to experiment by filling in the area on the squared paper, bearing in mind the recommended spacing. Always remember it is more effective to plant in big, bold groups. Time spent planning is always rewarded in future years, so you may like to create several alternative plans before deciding on the final version.
If you would like us to cast an eye over your scheme we will be very happy to do so.
We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service team who will be very pleased to answer any queries regarding roses, be it variety choice for specific positions, how to prune or any other cultural problems.
