Why move a rose?

Relocating your rose might be necessary for several reasons, such as improving drainage, increasing sunlight, or because the plant has outgrown its current space. Properly moving your rose can help it thrive in a more suitable environment and ensure its continued health and beauty.

When to move a rose

The ideal time to move your rose is during the winter months when the plant is dormant. However, it is possible to move it during the growing season if done carefully. If relocating in winter, prune the rose back to about half its size to make handling easier. For summer moves, a light prune will suffice.

Step by step guide

Step 1
Prune the rose

If moving in winter, cut the rose back by half. This reduces the plant's size and makes it easier to manage. In summer, perform a light prune to prepare the rose for relocation.
Step 2
Dig up the rose

Established roses often have extensive root systems. To minimise damage, dig a wide circle around the base of the rose, extending beyond the visible root ball. Use a digging spade and fork to carefully lift the rose, preserving as much soil around the roots as possible.
Step 3
Lift the rose

Gently lift the rose from the hole, ensuring the root ball remains intact. Transfer the rose to a large bucket or wheelbarrow to minimize stress. Add water to keep the roots hydrated during the move.
STEP 4
Prepare the new planting location

At the new site, fork over the soil to remove weeds and large stones. Enrich the soil by mixing in Carr's Soil Improver to enhance soil quality and support healthy growth.
STEP 5
Dig the new planting hole

Dig a hole in the new location that is approximately 45 cm wide and deep. Place a two spadefuls of soil improver at the bottom of the hole to provide essential nutrients for the rose.
STEP 6
Add mycorrhizal fungi

Before planting, sprinkle David Austin^® Mycorrhizal Fungi onto the rose's roots. These beneficial fungi help the roots establish more quickly in the new soil.
STEP 7
Plant the rose

Carefully position the rose in the prepared hole. Backfill with the soil you dug out earlier. Lightly firm the soil around the base of the rose using your foot to eliminate air pockets and ensure the plant is securely in place.
STEP 8
Water well

Water the rose generously after planting. Treat it as you would a newly planted rose for the first year, providing ample water and monitoring its progress. Although roses are resilient, the plant might initially show signs of stress or slower growth. With proper care, it should adapt to its new location and flourish.
