English Standard Tree Rose

English Standard Tree Rose

Standard Tree Roses are magnificent garden plants. They are created by budding a minimum of two shrubs on a stem; hence the dramatic effect. We believe English Roses, with their natural, bushy growth and beautiful, fragrant flowers, are the finest roses for growing as standards. They are ideal for creating focal points in key areas of the garden and can also be used to line a path, frame a doorway or bring interest to a bare wall. Standards are useful for adding height to a border and look particularly impressive when planted closely together in groups of three or four. It is important to stake standards at planting time. All are budded to 3’ 3” (1m) in height.

  1. Claire Austin

    Claire Austin

    English Standard Tree Rose
There is something a little special about white roses - they are all purity and light - and yet really good white roses are rare among English Roses and Hybrid Tea Roses alike. This is because white roses are very difficult to breed. 'Claire Austin' bears pleasingly cupped buds of a pale lemon shade which gradually open to form large, creamy white flowers of typical English Musk delicacy; their petals perfectly arranged in concentric circles, with a few more loosely arranged in the centre. They have a strong fragrance based on myrrh with dashes of meadowsweet, vanilla and heliotrope. Strong and particularly healthy. Undoubtedly one of our finest white roses to date. .

This variety bears some of the most perfectly formed flowers of true old rose character. Starting as attractive, nicely rounded buds, the flowers gradually open to shallow cups with perfectly arranged petals. Their colour is pure pink with soft blush on the outside and a lovely pure pink at the centre; the whole effect being totally charming. As the blooms age, the colour of the outer petals softens to a pearly shade. It has excellent health and the petals are particularly resistant to rain. The leaves are tinged red at first, later turning green, then dark green with age. It has a strong, warm, classic myrrh fragrance. .
