Welcome to Wentworth Woodhouse Rose Garden
About the Project
Dating back to circa 1738, the circular garden at Wentworth Woodhouse is one of the estate’s most enduring features, quietly bearing witness to centuries of history. Recently restored with exceptional care, this tranquil haven now welcomes a spectacular collection of David Austin® Roses, thoughtfully chosen not only for their beauty but also for their scent and structure - designed to create a sensory journey for visitors.
The transformation of this secluded space has been a labour of love, made possible by a generous private legacy from Margaret Vickers and a heartfelt donation from Audrey Morris. Skilled artisans from Ridgeway Forge and Heritage Masonry Contracts, together with the devoted Wentworth Woodhouse Garden Team, have rejuvenated the garden’s architecture - from newly crafted metal edgings to restored border walls and gateways.
A passionate team of volunteers, guided by David Austin®’s expert consultants, brought life to the garden through the planting of over 170 bare-root roses. Careful attention was given to each rose’s planting depth, spacing, and soil enrichment - all to ensure firm foundations and thriving growth. The garden has been planned with deliberate variety in growth habits, colours, and fragrances - from apricot-pink shrub roses to golden yellows and English climbers, to create a seamless hedge and a blooming spectacle that will fill the air with perfume from summer through autumn.
Together, these efforts have transformed the garden into a living tapestry of heritage, beauty, and nature’s finest artistry.
Wentworth Woodhouse (The House)
Wentworth Woodhouse is a grand symbol of English country heritage, its magnificent Georgian façade stretching longer than any other private house in Britain. Rooted in centuries of history, the estate offers an exceptional glimpse into architectural elegance and aristocratic life. The gardens, entwined with this heritage, form a graceful backdrop that frames both past and present, inviting visitors to wander through landscapes shaped by time and care.
