        Description
This variety has particularly beautiful blooms. The buds open to reveal many petalled cups, which gradually form large, flat rosettes. The colour is a very attractive shade of soft yellow, the petals paling prettily towards the edges. The flowers have a medium strength fragrance, which is a perfect balance of Tea and myrrh. It will quickly reach some height and still produce flowers and leaves lower down the plant. Named after the pilgrims in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. David Austin, 1991

Just a reminder that with living organisms there's no guarantee. We mail-ordered two David Austin climbing roses in our previous house for a tricky east-facing cottage wall. And they both grew beautifully as well as quickly. So we had no hesitation in going back for another one when we moved into a cottage with a NW-facing wall (but by the southern corner and in a large trough so getting maximum sunlight for such a situation and excellent compost). we also chose Pilgrim because it seemed well suited to handling the challenge. This time, however, only disappointment. It just struggles. We're 4 years in and the longest shoot has only managed less than a metre. Most summers there is little growth and we've probably had no more than half a dozen flowers in all this time. And it has been very prone to pests and bacterial attack, which is always more common is stressed plants. The only thing I would say is that this time we are situated at 450 feet, which might be a factor, though the house is not particularly exposed to wind and our neighbours in several cases have shrub roses in tip-top condition. My best guess is that this time the Pilgrim we got was not on top form and has then found the difficult position a bit too much for it ever to properly get established. So, as I said, a reminder that inevitably not every plant will thrive, even from the best supplier in the country.
