Shrub Roses

By the end of September, the rose garden is changing. The exuberance of summer is giving way to a slower rhythm, and many English Roses are setting hips, their once-constant flowers replaced by clusters of glowing fruit. Yet the borders need not feel diminished. With the right companions, roses can be framed and supported so that the garden still sings with colour, texture and grace well into October and beyond.

A red rose has a wonderfully compelling presence in the garden. Amongst a sea of green, even a glimpse of crimson catches the eye, drawing you closer for another look. Red can sometimes have a reputation for being difficult to use, particularly alongside softer colours. Yet the palette is far more varied than we might first imagine. From clear crimson to deep, velvety tones, red roses can bring warmth, richness and depth to a garden without overwhelming it.

There are few evenings quite like the Last Night of the Proms. Familiar melodies fill the Royal Albert Hall, the audience joins in and music heard and loved for generations is given fresh life once more. This year’s programme got us thinking about the curious connections between music, stories and the names of some of our roses. From Elgar and the Malvern Hills to Britain’s long relationship with the sea, each offers a thread to follow from the concert hall into the garden.

Yellow roses have a particular way of bringing light into the garden. From the palest lemon to rich, glowing gold, their colours can feel wonderfully inviting without necessarily being bold, illuminating a border much as sunshine does.

When we speak of “shade” in the garden, it is important to be precise. Few roses will prosper in deep shadow, but many are perfectly happy with four or five hours of sunlight a day. Think of those north-facing walls or quiet spots that bask in morning or evening light. These are not wasted spaces; with the right roses, they can become some of the most enchanting areas of the garden.

Orderly rows of cabbages, fruit cages heavy with berries, and muddy boots by the shed door define the classic allotment. Roses rarely fit this purely practical image. However, these tough, versatile plants offer immense value to productive spaces. They deliver fragrance, colour, and vital wildlife support directly alongside your harvest.

The best roses in any garden are the ones that demand a second look. They possess a magnetic charm that draws you back into the garden day after day, rewarding each visit with fresh petals, shifting hues, and the intoxicating fragrance of newly opened blooms.

A well-placed seat can completely change the way you experience your garden. It creates a destination, encourages you to slow down and offers the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of your roses from a different perspective.

Apricot and orange roses bring instant warmth to any garden design. These radiant shades bridge the gap between soft pastels and bold, dramatic colours. They capture the glowing light of late afternoon, making your outdoor space feel welcoming and alive. Whether you want a high-energy contrast or a soothing, monochromatic sanctuary, these sunset-toned blooms offer incredible versatility. They work brilliantly in traditional cottage borders, modern urban spaces, and formal courtyard displays alike.

The romance of a cottage garden is not reserved for sweeping borders or winding country paths. With the right planting strategy, even a handful of pots can capture that signature sense of abundance. You can easily fill a patio, balcony, or doorstep with vibrant flowers, rich fragrance, and pollinator-friendly movement.

If you dream of a traditional cottage garden filled with soft colours, overflowing borders, and intoxicating scents, finding the perfect anchor plant is essential. The Mill on the Floss^® is a variety that truly deserves a place at the heart of your outdoor space. It effortlessly combines breath-taking beauty with a robust garden performance, bringing timeless charm to borders, walkways, and arches all through the flowering season.

When choosing a rose for a garden wall, arch, or obelisk, most gardeners naturally turn to the traditional climbing section of the catalogue. Yet, the perfect vertical accent for your garden might not be a conventional climber at all.

If your roses seem particularly beautiful this year, you're not imagining it. Across the country, gardeners are enjoying one of the most impressive displays in recent memory. Climbers are covered in blooms, shrub roses are flowering with remarkable abundance and gardens are filled with colour, fragrance and life. The reason lies in a rare sequence of weather conditions that roses have responded to exceptionally well. A wet spring, plenty of sunshine and the recent spell of hot weather have combined to create near-perfect conditions for flowering.
