Climbing & Rambling

Picture an old apple tree in early summer. High among its branches, far above where anyone thought to plant a thing, sprays of soft flowers tumble from the canopy and scent the air below. It looks as though it simply happened. In truth, it began with a single rambling rose planted at the foot of the tree a few winters before, given just enough guidance to find its way up.

A red rose has a wonderfully compelling presence in the garden. Amongst a sea of green, even a glimpse of crimson catches the eye, drawing you closer for another look. Red can sometimes have a reputation for being difficult to use, particularly alongside softer colours. Yet the palette is far more varied than we might first imagine. From clear crimson to deep, velvety tones, red roses can bring warmth, richness and depth to a garden without overwhelming it.

There are few evenings quite like the Last Night of the Proms. Familiar melodies fill the Royal Albert Hall, the audience joins in and music heard and loved for generations is given fresh life once more. This year’s programme got us thinking about the curious connections between music, stories and the names of some of our roses. From Elgar and the Malvern Hills to Britain’s long relationship with the sea, each offers a thread to follow from the concert hall into the garden.

There is always room for another rose. When borders are full, the answer is often simply to look upwards. Climbing roses can transform arches, obelisks and pillars into wonderfully abundant garden features, bringing flowers and fragrance to eye level and above. They can tumble over an entrance, rise from the middle of a border or soften a simple post with foliage and bloom. And, with the right rose and a little thoughtful training, they need surprisingly little ground space to make quite an impression.

Rambling Roses have a natural affinity with trees. Their long, vigorous stems can be encouraged upwards into the branches, where they gradually weave through the canopy and open their flowers amongst the leaves. As the rose matures, the effect becomes increasingly natural, with great trusses of bloom appearing high above the ground and tumbling softly from the branches.

By early summer, a pergola clothed in roses can bear little resemblance to the structure beneath. Strong posts disappear behind leafy stems, flowers gather at eye level and, overhead, long canes wander from beam to beam, carrying loose clusters of bloom with them. On warm days, fragrance lingers beneath the canopy and fallen petals scatter the path below.

When we speak of “shade” in the garden, it is important to be precise. Few roses will prosper in deep shadow, but many are perfectly happy with four or five hours of sunlight a day. Think of those north-facing walls or quiet spots that bask in morning or evening light. These are not wasted spaces; with the right roses, they can become some of the most enchanting areas of the garden.

Orderly rows of cabbages, fruit cages heavy with berries, and muddy boots by the shed door define the classic allotment. Roses rarely fit this purely practical image. However, these tough, versatile plants offer immense value to productive spaces. They deliver fragrance, colour, and vital wildlife support directly alongside your harvest.

The entrance to your home is the first thing visitors see and the first view you enjoy each time you return. A climbing rose can completely transform a front door, soften the façade of a house or bring colour and fragrance to an otherwise ordinary wall. Whether you're looking to frame a doorway, brighten the front of your house or make the most of a small front garden, climbing and rambling roses offer a beautiful way to add height, character and seasonal interest.

Climbing roses and rambling roses each bring height, fragrance and beauty to the garden, but they do so in different ways. While both can transform walls, arches and pergolas, understanding their unique growing habits will help you choose the right rose for your space and enjoy its full potential for years to come.

A well-placed seat can completely change the way you experience your garden. It creates a destination, encourages you to slow down and offers the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of your roses from a different perspective.

There is a quiet luminosity to white and cream roses. Soft yet radiant, they have a remarkable ability to lift the garden and bring a sense of calm to the planting around them. Equally at home in traditional gardens and more contemporary spaces, they offer a timeless elegance that never feels overstated. Whether woven through mixed borders, trained over old walls or planted generously in sweeping drifts, white and cream roses bring light, softness and cohesion wherever they grow.

Choosing a rose is one of the quiet pleasures of gardening. Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing a series of articles looking at some of the simple things that can help when choosing the right rose for your garden.
